Segment 3: Testing the absolute top tier

In this third segment of our gravel bike test, we take a closer look at the absolute top tier. At this level, it is no longer about price versus performance, but about the very best currently available.

The bikes in this segment are built without compromise. Materials, finishing, and technology are all at the highest level, with every decision focused on maximum performance.

Nearly all models in this segment are equipped with the best components available, such as SRAM RED AXS and the highest-end carbon wheelsets. But more importantly, it is the frames and overall design that truly make the difference here.

What also stands out in this segment is the level of customization. While earlier segments mainly focus on component choices, this goes a step further. In three out of the four cases, the frames are fully custom made.

As a result, the focus shifts from choosing to creating. Geometry, finishing, and often even the paint scheme can be fully tailored to personal preference, often already included within the frame price. It does not get more custom than this. That makes this segment not only the highest technical level, but also the most personal.

What makes the difference at this level?

At this level, the differences become small, but decisive.

It is no longer about what a bike can do, but about how refined it feels while doing it. How directly it responds, how efficiently it carries speed, and how precise it feels in every situation.

Character also plays a much bigger role. These bikes are not designed to do everything, but to excel at something specific.

Where earlier segments were still about balance and versatility, this level is all about focus and perfection within a certain type of use.

The ultimate all-rounders

Mosaic GT-i45 / GT-i55 | Updated

With Mosaic, you don’t pick a frame off the rack. You have a titanium frame built that is fully tailored to your body, riding style and use. With the updated GT-i45 and GT-i55, you now have a choice of two versions.

The difference between them lies in tire clearance. If you mainly ride fast gravel and mixed terrain, the GT-i45 with 45 mm offers exactly the right balance. If you head for rough terrain more often and want wider tires, the GT-i55 is the logical choice.

In both cases the character remains unmistakably Mosaic. Titanium delivers a comfortable, stable and efficient ride, finished to the level Mosaic is known for. And the customization goes beyond tire clearance: geometry, build and color scheme are fully tailored to your wishes.

A true top-level all-rounder, now in two versions.

Factor SARANA | New

On paper, the SARANA is a specialist: a bike for ultra-distance races and rides measured in days rather than hours. In practice it turns out to be far more versatile than you might expect.

Factor’s racing DNA is clearly present. The SARANA feels sporty and efficient, but combines that with noticeably more comfort and composure. This is not a comfort bike with some speed added afterwards. It is a fast bike around which Factor has built comfort, stability and endurance.

You can see that in the details. The rear end flexes subtly to absorb vibrations, it accepts a suspension fork with 30 mm of travel and the down tube offers generous storage. Factor even developed dedicated frame bags for this model together with Post Carry.

This is a bike for those who ride long distances or simply want one fast, comfortable gravel bike for everything.

The most race-oriented bikes

Pinarello Dogma GR

The Dogma GR is without a doubt one of the most outspoken gravel race bikes in this segment.

The bike feels extremely direct and fast. Everything about this bike is aimed at performance, with clear influences from Pinarello’s racing DNA.

Where other brands in this segment strongly focus on customization, Pinarello instead chooses a fully developed platform. The geometry and characteristics are fixed, with the goal of delivering maximum performance without variables.

Customization here is more about the build kit and finishing, and less about the frame itself.

This is not an all-rounder, but a pure gravel race machine.

Argonaut GR3

The Argonaut GR3 combines high-end performance with an extreme level of customization.

What makes Argonaut unique is that not only the geometry is customized, but also the carbon lay-up itself is tuned specifically to each rider. Rider weight, riding style, and intended use are all taken into account.

This results in a bike that not only fits perfectly, but also rides exactly as intended.

In addition, the finishing can be fully customized, making every bike completely unique.

This is customization at the highest level, fully focused on performance.

Jaegher Hurricane FLX | New

The Hurricane FLX may well be the most personal bike in this test.

Every Hurricane is hand-welded in Ghent from Columbus XCr stainless steel. And custom really means custom here: not only the color, components and riding position, but also the geometry and therefore the handling are determined around the rider. The result surprised us. The Hurricane feels comfortable, yet fast and playful at the same time. Despite its classic looks, it rides nothing like a traditional steel gravel bike. Jaegher itself calls it a gravel racer built like a road bike, and that is spot on.

This is a bike for those who value craftsmanship and a hand-built frame, but want a modern, fast gravel bike.

Bikes with a very distinct character

Festka Spectre Gravel

The Festka Spectre Gravel may very well be the most outspoken bike in this segment.

Not only in terms of performance, but especially in finishing and design. Festka is known for its exceptionally high-quality paintwork and unique appearance.

Customization also plays a major role here. Geometry can be adjusted and the finishing is completely open to personal preference.

What truly sets Festka apart is the combination of performance and aesthetics. This is not only a fast bike, but also a statement piece.

For riders looking for something truly unique, both in appearance and ride feel.

In conclusion

What this segment mainly shows is where gravel bikes end up when no compromises are made anymore.

The differences here are not about capabilities, but about finesse. In how a bike responds, how it builds speed, and how precise it feels under load.

That is exactly why the choice in this segment becomes completely personal. Not because one bike is better than another, but because every bike represents a very clear and distinct vision.
